Deepfake technology has sparked debate since a video purportedly featuring Bollywood actor Rashmika Mandanna went viral on social media. The Pushpa actor was seen entering an elevator in the video. The video initially featured Zara Patel, a British-Indian influencer, but her face was later replaced with the actor’s using deepfake technology. The Animal actress Rashmika Mandanna, on the other hand, is not the only actress who has been targeted by deepfake technology. Several celebrities have previously been subjected to such incidents.

For the unversed, Deepfake is a type of synthetic media in which an existing image or video of a person is replaced with the likeness of another person using artificial intelligence. While the act of faking content is not new, deepfakes use powerful machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to manipulate or generate visually and audibly deceptive content.

Rashmika Mandanna the latest victim:

1. Tom Hanks:

Earlier this month, Tom Hanks, the actor, warned fans that an advertisement for a dental plan featuring him was created using artificial intelligence. The actor said in a message to his 9.5 million Instagram followers that his image was used without his permission. Hanks wrote, “BEWARE!! There’s a video on the internet promoting a dental plan featuring an AI version of me. I have nothing to do with it.” He also added a screenshot of a computer-generated image of himself from the clip.

2. YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson:

Jimmy Donaldson, also known as Mr. Beast on YouTube, recently fell victim to deceptive AI-driven advertisements. The deceptive TikTok advertisement featured a fake video of Donaldson and falsely promised viewers $2 iPhones.

3. Kristen Bell:

Kristen Bell, the 39-year-old actress best known for her role as Anna in Disney’s ‘Frozen,’ felt violated after discovering that her image had been manipulated and used in explicit content on the internet. Her husband, Dax Shepard, alerted her to this disturbing revelation.

4. Rashmika Mandanna:

Rashimka Mandanna issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) after her morphed video went viral on social media, saying, “I feel hurt to share this and have to talk about the deepfake video of me being spread online. Something like this is honestly, extremely scary not only for me but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused.”

Deepfakes are photos and videos in which one person’s face is realistically replaced with another’s. Many AI tools are almost free to Internet users on their smartphones. Deepfake technology’s widespread use has prompted calls for ethical and regulatory guidelines to address the challenges it poses. Deepfake content detection tools are being developed, and efforts are being made to raise awareness about its existence. As society grapples with the far-reaching implications of this powerful AI-driven tool. Balancing technological advancement with ethical considerations remains a key challenge.
