‘Not a smart move’- Fans react as Lionel Messi confirms that he will be joining MLS club Inter Miami
Lionel Messi on Wednesday said that he will sign for Major League football in Inter Miami. This means that the Argentina 2022 World Cup winner chose the American league over a return to Barcelona or a big path breaking deal in Saudi Arabia. Messi spent two seasons at Paris Saint Germain (PSG). He played his last game for the club on Saturday. He had switched bases to PSG from Barcelona in 2021.
Major League Soccer (MLS) and Inter Miami confirmed the news on social media, although the American league stated that “work remains to finalise a formal agreement”. “I’ve taken the decision that I am going to Miami, I don’t have (the deal) 100 percent sealed or maybe there’s something left to do, but we decided to continue our path there,” Messi said to Spanish newspapers Diario Sport and Mundo Deportivo.
I wanted to enjoy my day-to-day life more- Lionel Messi on joining Inter Miami
“After winning the World Cup and not being able to go to Barca, it’s time to go to MLS to live football in a different way and enjoy my day-to-day life more.” “If it had been a question of money, I would have gone to Saudi Arabia or elsewhere,” said Messi. “It seemed a lot of money and the truth is that my decision went another way and not for money.” Messi has won the Ballon d’Or seven times is his glorious football career.
There were reports that Messi would join Barcelona and that he would make another fairytale comeback to the club after a two year hiatus. There were other reports that stated the star-footballer would join Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia and after he does so the Messi- Cristiano Ronaldo rivalry would be reignited. Ronaldo had moved from Manchester United to Al Nassr in 2022/23 season.
All those reports went down the drain as Messi choose to go and play in America for Inter Miami and MLS. Messi has come to Miami for a holiday on a number of occasions previously. Some reports indicate that key MLS sponsors such as Adidas and Apple TV, who own the league’s domestic broadcasting rights, have been a key contributing factor in making the deal a reality.
Let us take a look at the reactions on Twitter:
After accomplishing all he has achieved throughout his historic career, how can we blame the man? Let him enjoy the back end of his career with his family.
