Former Indian captain Virat Kohli has candidly admitted to making numerous mistakes during his tenure as skipper, while maintaining that he never acted out of selfish motives. Kohli, who stepped down as captain of the Indian cricket team in the shorter format in 2021, was subsequently removed from the ODI captaincy by selectors in a bid to avoid having separate captains for white-ball formats. Following India’s tour of South Africa, Kohli announced his resignation from the Test captaincy as well.

In an episode of PUMA’s Let There Be Sport documentary series, Kohli acknowledged his fallibility as a leader and emphasized the importance of learning from one’s mistakes. “I have no shame in accepting that I have made many mistakes when I was the captain,” Kohli said. “But the one thing I know, for sure, is that I never did anything for my own selfish motives. I can guarantee that from day one to the last day.”

Kohli reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the team’s success, stating, “I have not done anything for myself. I just had one goal: to take the team ahead.” While he admitted that decisions might not always have been correct, he emphasized that his intentions were never misplaced. “The intent was never in the wrong place,” he asserted. “Failures will keep happening, but you will learn from that.”

The 34-year-old highlighted the significance of learning from mistakes and the evolution it brings. “Many times decisions have been wrong, but these things teach you a lot. Then you start taking it as the whole journey and what went well, but then you learn from all situations,” he explained.
