‘No Gill, No dil’ – Fans fuming in anger as Shubman Gill is left out of Nagpur Test against Australia
The Border Gavaskar Trophy has begun. The first is played at Nagpur. In the match, India had to make some changes in the playing XI. They had to find Rishabh Pant’s replacement as a keeper, and KS Bharat was handed a cap on game day. The other conundrum that they had is who to replace Shreyas Iyer with.
They had two middle-order contenders for it. Suryakumar Yadav has been in great T20I form for India over the last year and also scored three hundreds for the Men in Blue. The other option that they had was Shubman Gill, who scored his maiden hundred in Test cricket in Bangladesh recently. In the end, they gave Suryakumar Yadav his debut cap.
Gill scored a double hundred in ODIs against New Zealand recently
Gill has been in amazing form in ODIs. He made one double hundred against New Zealand at Hyderabad recently, and also scored his maiden T20I hundred at Ahmedabad. He also scored three ODI tons recently. Gill can also bat in the middle order. In the Under 19 World Cup in 2019, he scored a hundred against Pakistan batting in the middle order. He also has a good game plan against spin.
It remains to be seen how Gill will take this snub of sorts. He would have been itching to play against the Australians if his recent form is taken into account. Gill had also played well against the Australians in the 2021 edition of the Border-Gavaskar trophy, where he made 91 in the Brisbane Test to hand India a famous 2-1 series win.
India also had a keeper issue to sort out, they would have contemplated between Ishan Kishan and Bharat. Kishan is a like-for-like replacement for Pant and can play in a style similar to Pant but KS Bharat is the better keeper to the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Bharat has been with the Indian side over the last three to four years as a backup keeper and so he got the nod.
