In a major development, Chetan Sharma has been reappointed as Chief Selector of the Indian Cricket Board and will also continue as the chairman of the selection panel. The Board has surprisingly shown faith in Chetan after he was sacked following India’s 20- 20 World debacle in 2022 against England where they suffered a shock exit. This puts Indian Cricket in a shaky state because it is indicating that the sacking of Chetan earlier was just an eyewash and was merely done for the sake of it.

The new selection panel will consist of Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola and Shridharan Sharath as the selectors. They were selected by the three-member cricket advisory committee consisting of Jatin Paranjpee, Sulakshana Naik and Ashok Malhotra.

This comes at a time when 2022 was a year to forget for the Indian Men’s Cricket Team as they crashed out of the Asia Cup in 2022 and lost to Sri Lanka and Pakistan. They did not end the 20-20 World Cup on a good note and also lost their last two ODI series at the end of 2022 against New Zealand and Bangladesh.

The move of reappointing Chetan indicates that the board has not learnt from its past mistakes. There were some questionable calls made during Chetan’s tenure such as not playing Yuzvendra Chahal despite naming him in the squad.

India had the likes of Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya and regular white ball skipper Rohit Sharma led the side at different intervals as Rohit had fitness and injury issues. It feels that the board is not looking to change things and is repeating the same mistakes as it had done earlier.

India also crashed out of the World Cup in 2021 after defeats to Pakistan and New Zealand. They have not been able to break their trophy drought in World events as an elusive World Trophy has evaded them since 2013. It remains to be seen how the new selection panel performs under Chetan yet again. Twitter was frustrated, let us take a look at the reactions here-
