Australia suffered a big blow after Tea on Day 2 at Lords as Nathan Lyon pulled up badly with a suspected calf injury after he attempted a catch at fine leg. He was subsequently ruled out in terms of bowling at Lords and his participation in the Ashes 2023 is in doubt. But Lyon did not let the injury deter him in terms of batting as he played a herculean inning of 4 off 13 balls. He hit one boundary in his knock. When he came out to bat, he was given a standing ovation by the Lords crowd.

Meanwhile, Kevin Pietersen’s comments that were directed at Nathan Lyon did not strike a chord with him as he gave a sharp reply to them. Pietersen said that Australia would be helped immensely if Lyon got hit while batting which would mean that the Kangaroos could bring in a concussion substitute. “Imagine if he [Lyon] had been hit on the head and got concussion,” Pietersen said. “He’d have got a like-for-like replacement and a world class spinner [Murphy], based on how he performed in India, it gives food for thought.” Pietersen said.

I will start rehab and get back to doing what I love -Nathan Lyon

To Pieterson’s thoughts, Lyon said Australia have still not recovered from the shocking death of Phil Hughes who was hit by a bouncer off Sean Abbott. “I have heard comments that people thought I went out there to get hit in the head,” Lyon thundered. “I’m really against that because I’ve lost one of my mates due to being hit in the head. So I think that’s a really poor excuse or conversation being had.” Lyon also said he was at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) the day Hughes had passed away.

Lyon was very downcast because he would not be able to take part in the series further but, he was confident of coming back strong. “I have been absolutely shattered. I have been in tears, I have been upset, I have been hurting. That shows this team means everything to me. He said  “And I will start this rehab journey now to get back and play my role and keep loving what I am able to do.” “This is a little bump in the road. I can learn from it and get better. But right now, I am pretty shattered.” The Australian off-spinner added.
