There are a couple of bad news for South Africa as they play their fourth ODI against Australia. Two of the best ODI players of South Africa, Temba Bavuma and Anrich Nortje, are missing the fourth ODI against Australia. The two players have been the mainstays in the ODI setup of South Africa in the last 3-4 years. Ahead of a must-win game, the news acts as a huge dent in the confidence of South Africa.

The South African captain has been very consistent in ODIs in the last few months. In 2023, the opener has been very consistent and aggressive as well. The right-handed batter has been one of the best batters in the world in the calendar year in ODIs. Against a team like Australia, the home side will miss the services of their regular captain. But Bavuma’s unavailability is more of a precautionary measure.

The South African ODI captain has an adductor strain. While Bavuma is ruled out of only the fourth ODI, the pace sensation Anrich Nortje is ruled out of the remainder of the series. The tearaway quick has a lower-back injury, which can be dangerous for pacers. Aiden Markram will lead South Africa in the fourth ODI in the absence of their regular captain.

Big concerns for South Africa in the fourth ODI against Australia

Earlier in the series, Nortje missed the third ODI due to back spasms. A statement from Cricket South Africa said, “Nortje underwent scans and consulted with a specialist this week and will start bowling again this weekend under the supervision of the Proteas medical team,” and confirmed the absence of their star pacer. The lower-back injury adds a concern for South Africa.

It is to be seen who will replace Nortje in the remainder of the series. Australia is in fine form now and are hard to be stopped. The absence of Nortje makes the job of the bowlers a lot tougher. With Australia leading the series 2-1, it is again a must-win game for South Africa to stay alive in the series.
