Shubman Gill, trusted to be India’s best aspiring cricketer, opened up on his ODI debut against New Zealand in 2019 and said that he was disappointed with the same. For the unversed, the Indian team was bowled out for a cheap total of 95 in the game, with India leading the series 3-0 and eventually the Black Caps crushed India by chasing down the total within 15 overs.

Gill, who contributed only 9 runs in his debut match, said that he was disquieted by the same and added that it was MS Dhoni, the former Indian captain, who lifted his mood up. Saying that he liked the gesture from the 2011 World Cup-winning captain, Gill added that it was a moment to cherish despite his dismal first outing.

“The day I made by debut, I was dismissed when India were around 15. I was sitting outside and was sad having scored just 9 runs in my debut. So Mahi bhai came and saw that I was very sad. I was then around 18-19 years old,” Gill was quoted as saying to Sonam Bajwa in Dil Diyan Gallan Season 2.

He started laughing and joking: Shubman Gill

Further, the right-handed batter claimed that Dhoni calmed him down by joking around about his debut and by saying that Gill had a better debut than the former Indian wicketkeeper. For the unversed, Dhoni was run-out for a duck in his debut match against Bangladesh in 2004.

“He told me at least your debut was better than mine. I realised he was dismissed for golden duck in his debut. He did not face a single ball and was run out. Then he started laughing and joking and I was touched by that gesture,” Gill was quoted as saying.

Gill is widely believed to be the replica of Indian captain Rohit Sharma, of his aggressive intent and his classy style of batting. However, it remains to be seen if the batter can sustain and carry on to play for India in the longer run.
