The Indian Cricket Team will have two shots at winning a World event. They will first play the Test Championship final in June. Then India will play the ODI World cup at home. India have had a nine-year Apex Cricket Council trophy drought since 2013. When Ravi Shastri was asked about India’s trophy drought, he had a very different opinion. India last won the 50-over World Cup in 2011. Since 2011, India have reached the semi-final in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.

In the 20-20 World Cups, India reached the semi-final in the 2016 edition where they lost to West Indies. In the 2022 edition, India had a good campaign but where smashed left, right and centre by England at Adelaide and lost the semi-final by 10 wickets. Shastri said that once India starts winning trophies multiple trophies will follow. He also gave examples of Sachin Tendulkar and Lionel Messi.

I think India is due- Ravi Shastri on India winning World events

“I think India are due. They have been consistent – they reached finals, and semi-finals on a regular basis. Look at Sachin Tendulkar. He had to play six World Cups to win one ICC trophy. 6 World Cups means 24 years. And on his last World Cup, he won. Look at Lionel Messi. Classic example that is. I mean how long he has been playing. And when he started winning, he won the Copa America, and the World Cup and scored in the final as well. So you have to wait. It will rain,” Shastri said on Sports Yaari.

India have won two ODI World Cups in 1983 and 2011. They have won one edition of the Champions Trophy in 2013 and one 20-20 World Cup in 2007. Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, India made a good showing at world events but lost the big matches. Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma India lost the 20-20 World Cup in Australia.

The 2023 World Cup will be held in India for the first time since 2011. India will want to utilise their home conditions to their advantage and try to win the World Cup. This World Cup will be a very closely contested tournament as all the big sides have great experience touring India because of playing a lot of cricket there and also due to the Indian T20 League.
