Star Hyderabad batter Tilak Varma got his maiden ODI call on Monday. He was included in the 17-member Asia Cup squad as a backup batter. This decision came as a surprise to fans and cricket pundits. However, 20-year-old Tilak was also shocked when he was named in the squad. Tilak, who made his international debut against the West Indies earlier this month, had a great series in Carrebian.
He was the top scorer for India in the five-match T20I series. However, his performance took a dip in Ireland, where he scored just one run in two innings. In his less than a month-long international career, Tilak has scored 174 runs in seven innings, including a half-century. Despite a brief international career, team management expressed their belief in his potential and named him for the prestigious tournament.
Speaking about the same, Tilak said, “I never dreamed that I would be debuting directly in the Asia Cup, and that too on the one-day side. I was always dreaming that I would be debuting for India in ODIs. But it is a big thing for me. And I always dreamed of this, like debuting for India in ODIs. That too, in like a single year, I got my T20I debut, and suddenly, in the next month, I’m just getting a call for the Asia Cup. So yeah, it is one of my dreams, and I’m just preparing for it.”

Further judging his selection, Tilak expressed confidence and excitement for making his debut in ODIs. He said that he has great experience playing List A cricket and is looking forward to making his mark in ODI cricket. “I’m pretty confident about playing one-day cricket because I have played ODI cricket for as long as you said, like in List A cricket. I have done well in List A cricket for my state, and the teams have also done well, so I’m pretty confident that I can do well in ODIs, so I’m looking forward to it,” said Tilak.
Further, Tilak also praised India skipper Rohit Sharma for his constant support. He said Rohit always backed me. “Rohit Bhaiya always backed me. When I was playing in the IPL, he used to come near me. I was a bit nervous when I was in the IPL at the start, so he only came near me and talked about the game and said that you should always enjoy your game and always feel free. Whenever you want to talk, you can come any time for me or text me, so I’ll be there for you,” Tilak further added.
It is worth noting that Rohit also captains Tilak Varma in the Indian Premier League, who plays for the Mumbai Indians. For MI, in the last two years, Tilak has scored 740 runs in 25 matches at an average of 38.95 at number 4. He has a blistering strike rate of 144.53 in his IPL career. Earlier this year, Rohit predicted that Tilak would be donning India’s jersey soon because of his temperament.
