‘Liberals ki aur jalegi ab’ – Fans react as Supreme Court lawyer files complaint against Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan over Namaz row
Star Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan has been phenomenal throughout the ongoing ODI World Cup. He is the leading run scorer in the ongoing tournament, with 248 runs in three innings. He has the highest average of 124 in the tournament. However, an unwanted controversy is mounting over him, with demands for action against the batter.
Rizwan was seen offering prayers during the game against the Netherlands on the cricket pitch. The situation escalated as Rizwan dedicated their next match against Sri Lanka to the people of Gaza and Palestine. The display of religious spirituality and support for a terrorist group didn’t go well with many, as an Indian lawyer has filed a complaint against him.
In the latest development, Supreme Court lawyer Vineet Jindal has filed a complaint against Rizwan with the Apex Cricket Council. The lawyer has alleged that Rizwan displayed his religious spirituality intentionally in front of an Indian crowd. The lawyer also alleged that Rizwan’s antics were against the spirit of the game. “The act of displaying his religion by Mohammed Rizwan purposefully depicts his intent to convey that he is a Muslim, defeating the spirit of sports. Rizwan was seen offering prayers amid the field while his teammates were waiting for the drinks during the break”, the complaint reads.
Jindal questions the intentions of Pakistani players
Further explaining his allegations, Vineet Jindal questioned Waqar Younis’ comments on Rizwan offering prayers. In his letter to Apex Cricket Council chief Jindal, he said, “Earlier in 2021, Rizwan had offered namaz on the ground. When the Babar Azam-led side defeated India by 10 wickets in the T20 World Cup ‘Super 12’ game, former Pakistan pace bowler Waqar Younis expressed his glee and voiced, “What I liked most is what Rizwan did. He stood in the middle of the ground and read the prayers in front of the Hindus.”
“This came after the 31-year-old Mohammad Rizwan used the cricket match as an opportunity to flaunt his faith in front of millions of viewers belonging to various religions. Pakistani social media users have also lauded batsman Mohammad Rizwan for offering an on-field prayer during the match”, Jindal further added. He also demanded strict action against Rizwan and said, “Therefore, it is requested to take strict action against Mohammed Rizwan, wicketkeeper and batsman of the Pakistan cricket team.”
