‘Legend on and off the field’ – Fans react to Virender Sehwag offering free education to victims of Odisha train accident

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag displayed a magnanimous gesture towards the children who were affected by the tragic train accident in Odisha on Friday. So far, the horrific rail accident has claimed 275 lives and 1175 people have been injured. The nasty collision that took place involved three trains which were the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah superfast train, and a goods train. It has been seen as one of the most gruesome railway accidents.

Sehwag on Twitter, put out a picture of the accident site and posted a heartwarming message alongside it. He wrote, “This image will haunt us for a long time. In this hour of grief, the least I can do is to take care of the education of children of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident. I offer such children free education at Sehwag International School’s boarding facility.” After Sehwag put the message there was a lot of support on Twitter from the fans as they hailed him for his act at such a difficult time.

The accident unfolded as follows: The Coromandel Express came in contact with a stationery goods train which resulted in the toppling of several carriages. Some of the carriages which toppled over fell into the Bengaluru-Howrah superfast express train, which was moving at that point. The horrible collision has given rise to investigations to determine what caused the crash, which could include human error, signal failure, and other causes that might have contributed to the three-train crash.

Sehwag had started Sehwag International School after retirement. The swashbuckling former opener was a revelation for India and Test and ODI cricket. He had a cherishing international career.  Sehwag has scored 8586 runs in Tests at an average of 49.34 and at a strike rate of 82.23. The right-hander scored 32 fifties and 23 hundred. In the ODI format, he scored 8273 ODI runs at an average of 35.05 and at a strike rate of 104.33.

The former India cricketer has a double hundred in ODI’s and also has made 15 centuries and 38 half-centuries. His double hundred came against West Indies in Indore. He was the second India after Sachin Tendulkar to score a double ton in ODI.
