Even as the ODI World Cup will be played in India in October, Ben Stokes has said that he would not reverse his decision to come out of ODI cricket. He said that he wants to go on holiday after the Ashes series. Stokes played a very instrumental role in the 2019 World Cup where the England all-rounder scored 465 runs in 11 games at an average of 66.42. Stokes hit the highest score of 89 in the tournament and also struck with the ball picking 7 wickets.

In 2022, Stokes announced that he would quit playing ODI cricket in what was a shocking decision to cricket fans from all over the world. The 32-year-old had hung up his boots from the ODI format citing heavy workloads. Stokes played his last game against South Africa at Chester-le-Street. The left-hander has played 105 ODI games and has scored 2924 runs at an average of 39.28 and has scored three centuries. With the ball, he has 74 scalps to his name.

I have seen specialists regarding my knee – Ben Stokes

“I’m retired. I’m going on holiday after this game and that’s as far as I’m thinking,” Stokes said during a press conference when asked about his future in ODI cricket. Stokes has had problems with his knee. He did not play a full season in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The England all-rounder said he wanted to get his knee fixed as soon as possible. Stokes did not bowl many overs in the IPL and also at the Ashes against Australia.

“It’s something I obviously want to get sorted. The times in which I’ve seen specialists and stuff like that there has been cricket around. So, as it’s been manageable, we’ve just cracked on. But I think that is a good time to have some serious conversations with medics around what is potentially something I could do to get a role in which I can bowl without having to worry about my knee. Those are conversations we will be able to have in that time off.” Stokes added.
