Kolkata played Bangalore in match nine of the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League at the iconic Eden Gardens, which was intended to be the venue of their first match since 2019. The team that won the toss, Royal Challengers Bangalore, decided to bowl first on a pitch with a lot of room for scoring. 

Kolkata got a strong start to their innings but kept losing wickets at regular intervals which was the reason for the low scoring rate in the first 10 overs of their innings. Gurbaz was the only batter that made a significant contribution from the top order as he scored a valuable fifty to get the team going.

After five wickets fell within the first 10 overs, it was on Shardul Thakur and Rinku Singh to take the team forward. In only twenty balls, Shardul Thakur celebrated his maiden IPL fifty and completely destroyed the Bangalore attack. Shardul has become, along with Jos Buttler, the joint-fastest player to get 50 runs off just 20 balls, and he alone has changed Kolkata from being weak to being strong. 

At Eden Gardens, Kolkata Knight Riders set Royal Challengers Bangalore a target of 205 runs. The mountain that the Kolkata side had set for them would undoubtedly be difficult for the Bangalore squad to climb.

The 44-run unbroken stand gets snapped by Sunil Narine, and Kohli’s battle with the spinner continued as the spinner hammers the opener. Kohli pays the price for swinging outside the line and attempting to drive the delivery to the leg side. He leaves after facing only 18 balls, which is a crucial wicket for Kolkata.

Glenn Maxwell was castled by Varun Chakravarthy, and considering the match’s circumstances, Maxwell’s stroke was incredibly poor. Maxwell spotted the ball clanking his stumps as he took a reckless stroke across the line. Beautiful bowling by Varun Chakravarthy, who despite Bracewell’s successful boundary attempt took three crucial wickets to give Kolkata the upper hand.

Anuj Rawat, an impact player for the RCB, is removed by Suyash Sharma, who also claims his first IPL wicket. Although Rawat attempts a crazy slog, he is only able to obtain an upper edge as Narine makes a secure catch.After that it was just a mere formality for the Kolkata team as they got the other batters out even though the tailenders wagged for a bit. In the end, Kolkata completed a massive win over the Bangalore side in the IPL by defeating them for a massive margin of 82 runs.
