India and Australia battled it out during the first ODI at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The coin fell in favour of India and they elected to bowl first. India got off to the perfect start as Mohammed Siraj castled Travis Head with a beauty, early on.

Then Steven Smith and Mitchell Marsh got together. Marsh made a blitzkrieg of 81 off 65 balls with 10 fours and five sixes. His innings threatened to take the game away from India.

Marsh was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja when he tried to hit him out of the ground. Steve Smith made 22 off 30 balls with four fours but he was sent back by the skipper Hardik Pandya, who won the captain’s battle. Marnus Labuschagne was not his most comfortable self as he perished to Kuldeep Yadav.

Mitchell Starc shook the India top order and picked up three wickets

Then, it was the Mohammed Shami show. The India pacer got his act together and scalped the big wickets of Josh Inglis, Cameron Green and Marcus Stonis which broke the back of Australia’s middle-order. Then shortly after, Maxwell was dismissed trying to take on Ravindra Jadeja.  Siraj polished off the tail by getting Sean Abott and Adan Zampa out. Australia, as a result, were bowled out for 188.

India would have assumed that the run chase was going to be easy but they were far from it. Ishan Kishan was sent back by Stoinis, early. Mitchell Starc wreaked havoc on the India’s top order. He dismissed Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav.  KL Rahul and Pandya tried to bail India out but Pandya was out after scoring 25 off 31 with three fours and one six. India batted poorly and put themselves in a tight spot at 39-4

Rahul joined forces with Ravindra Jadeja and made an unbeaten 74 off 90 balls with seven fours and a six. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 45 off 69 balls with five fours. Thanks to those contributions, India beat Australia by five wickets in the end.
