Shreyas Iyer has been officially ruled out of the Indian T20 League and will also miss the Test Championship final due to back injury. The India batter was first doubtful for the Indian T20 League. Kolkata had appointed Nitish Rana to be captain in the absence of Iyer. Kolkata had done some trading ahead of the 2023 season. They brought in Rahamanullah Gurbaz and Lockie Ferguson. They also brought in Shardul Thakur.

Kolkata had a new coach in Chandrakant Pandit. Iyer had changed bases from Delhi to Kolkata last season. He did not have the best of debuts there. Kolkata finished seventh on the points table in 2022. The Shreyas Iyer led side were accused of making two many changes in the playing XI and also it hampered the composition of the side. Kolkata were playing a different lineup in every game. This did not do the atmosphere of the side any good and they ended up having an absolute sea-saw season.

Shreyas Iyer had led Kolkata last year in 2022 and Kolkata finished seventh

Iyer had missed out on the limited overs leg of the New Zealand series due to back problems. Ajay Jadeja and Virender Sehwag had commented on batters getting back injuries. Jadeja said that he had not heard of batters getting back injuries. Sehwag went on to say that the modern players are mostly getting injured because of lifting too many weights.

India will be without the services of Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah for the Test Championship final. Pant had been India’s best batter in Test cricket. The wicketkeeper batter has made hundreds in England and Australia. Pant last played a Test series for India against Bangladesh. Pant had a near-fatal accident while he was driving from Delhi to Roorkee. The India stumper had surgery done on his right knee and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

This will be the second time that India will play in the Test Championship Final. India lost the first Test Championship final at Edgbaston against New Zealand. India and Australia will battle it out at the Oval between 7 to 11 June after the Indian T20 League concludes.
