In the fifth game of the ongoing SA20 2024, Durban Super Giants and Sunrisers Eastern Cape locked horns in Gqeberha. Ahead of the game, the defending champs, SEC had only one point as their opening game washed out due to rain. On the other hand, DSG was looking solid after their win against MI Cape Town. Meanwhile, in this game, the Super Giants won the toss and chose to bat first.

They had a great start with Quinton de Kock and Matthew Breetzke putting together 58 runs in just 5.3 overs. After their wickets, former Eastern Cape player JJ Smuts hurt his former team with an inning of 75 off 38 balls including four fours and seven sixes. Alongside him, Nicholas Pooran (60*) hit an unbeaten fifty and helped the team reach 225/3.

In reply, the home team lost the wickets of their openers for 13 runs. Even though skipper Aiden Markram and Tom Abell put together 83 runs for the third wicket, the defending champions were never in the chase. They ended with only 190/9, losing the game by 35 runs. However, the home team stopped their rivals from getting a bonus point.

Aiden Markram: “It was a good game. The general cricket lover would have appreciated the game. Not at our best… probably we could have been better from the execution point of view. It’s quite frightening what guys can do these days (referring to Abell’s efforts)! If you don’t take wickets regularly, they (DSG) are going to hurt you. Certainly no panic, but time to learn.”
