In the 31st game of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, Asian rivals, Pakistan and Bangladesh locked horns at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Ahead of the game, the 2015 quarterfinalists were coming five losses, having started the tournament with a win against their Asian neighbors, Afghanistan. On the other hand, after winning the first two games, things went haywire for the 1992 winners in the last four games.

Meanwhile, in this game, the Tigers won the toss and batted first. However, the decision proved wrong as once again, their batting faltered during the innings apart from a few good innings. In the powerplay, Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf combined for three wickets and reduced their opposition to 23/3. At this stage, the likes of Litton Das and Mahmudullah slowly and steadily put together 79 runs.

However, after this partnership was broken, not much happened in the team’s favor. In the end, the likes of Afridi and Mohammad Wasim took three wickets each while Iftikhar Ahmed and Usama Mir took one each. On the other hand, Haris Rauf took two and bowled out the opposition for 204 runs in 45.1 overs.

Pakistan won convincingly and jumped to number five

Ahead of the game, the former champions were lurking at number seven, only above the likes of England, Netherlands, and Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Fakhar Zaman, who made his comeback in the playing XI after playing against the Netherlands early in the tournament, hit seven sixes and three fours to reach 81 runs. On the other hand, Abdullah Shafique got 68 and both put together 128 runs in just 21 overs, making it easy for the rest of the batters to improve their NRR.

In the end, the team won the game by seven wickets and 17.3 overs to spare. Thanks to their big win, they have jumped to number five and need to win against the likes of England and New Zealand. Apart from this, they need a lot of results to go their way to reach the semis.
