Former Indian cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath has raised questions about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy after India’s disappointing defeat against South Africa in the first Test. Badrinath emphasised the success and leadership credentials of Virat Kohli, pointing out Kohli’s remarkable record as a Test captain.

It’s worth noting that Kohli has scored over 5000 runs, 40 wins, and 17 losses in 68 Tests as captain. He highlighted Kohli’s role in India’s historic Test series victory in Australia and questioned why Kohli isn’t leading the Test team. Comparing Kohli’s Test credentials with Rohit Sharma’s, Badrinath expressed concerns over Rohit’s inconsistent performance as an opener outside India.

“Kohli is an exceptional Test captain with over 5000 runs, 40 wins, and 17 losses in 68 Tests. He led the team to a remarkable victory in the Australia series and has the fourth-most wins as Test captain,” Subramaniam Badrinath said on his YouTube channel.

“Why isn’t Virat Kohli leading India?” questions Badrinath

While acknowledging Rohit as a big player with runs to his name, Badrinath questioned the choice of a weaker player leading the Test team over Kohli. He pointed out that Kohli is a superior Test batter and raised the query of why a less-proven opener is leading the team.

“Why isn’t Virat Kohli the Test team captain? He’s a better test batter than Rohit. Why is a weaker player leading instead of him? Although Rohit Sharma has been in and out, he’s a big player and has scored runs everywhere. But he hasn’t proven himself as an opener outside of India. So, why is he there?” Badrinath added.

Badrinath’s remarks, shared on his YouTube channel, highlight the scrutiny surrounding Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, especially in contrast to the successful leadership of Virat Kohli in Test cricket. The comparison raises debates about the criteria for captaincy selection and the performance expectations from leaders in the Indian cricket team.
