In the battle of the top two teams of the table, Dambulla Aura emerged victorious, as they beat B-Love Kandy in the 19th match of the season by 20 runs. It was a slow track in Colombo, which led to the captain of Kandy, Wanindu Hasaranga, bowling first. The Kandy captain probably expected the wicket to stay the same throughout the match, which was not to be.
With the progression of the match, the wicket became slower. Dambulla Aura got a good start from their openers. Avishka Fernando was so good at the top. The opener scored 41 runs in 27 balls and helped his team to maintain a good run rate. Sadeera Samarawickrama scored 31 runs in 26 balls. But the required impact was provided by the duo of Ben McDermott and Hayden Kerr, who have been valuable additions.
McDermott was at his usual best in the middle overs, who created boundaries out of nowhere. A good strike rotation from the 28-year-old and a solid finish by Kerr helped Dambulla to post a total of 162 runs on the board. For Kandy, Mujeeb Ur Rahman bowled well and picked 2 wickets. Chaturanga De Silva and Wanindu Hasaranga picked a wicket each, while Nuwan Pradeep cleaned up the tail well.
B-Love Kandy collapsed in the second half
Chasing 163, Kandy was in trouble straight away. Dhananjaya De Silva got the big wickets of Mohammad Harris and Fakhar Zaman with the new ball. Wanindu Hasaranga did his bit and scored 19 runs in 11 balls. In walked Angelo Mathews and looked in good touch. The experienced batter scored 26 runs in 15 deliveries and threatened to take the match away from Dambulla.
Dhananjaya De Silva was brought back into the attack. The 31-year-old weaved magic yet again and picked wickets out of nowhere. The Colombo-born bowler dismissed a dangerous-looking Mathews and Chaturanga De Silva in a single over. What followed was an unreal collapse. From 88/3 at one stage, Kandy was dismissed for 142 runs. Pramod Madushan bowled well towards the end.
