Yashasvi Jaiswal has become the talk of the town post his batting heroics in Dominica. Jaiswal showed the world what he was made of on his debut Test. The left-hander put together a well-crafted innings of 171 off 367 balls with 14 fours and one six.  The Mumbaikar also provided an element of difference at the top as India went in with a left-hand, right-hand combination after a long time. Jaiswal’s batting prowess helped India to score 421-5 declared in the first innings after West Indies were bowled out for 150.

Jaiswal after getting his name into the record books for scoring a century on his Test match debut Jaiswal’s father revealed that the India opener gave him a call at around 4:30 AM in the morning during the Dominica Test. Along with Jaiswal’s batting heroics, Ravichandran Ashwin wreaked havoc with the ball as he ran through the West Indies batting order which did not play him well. The ace off-spinner picked up 12 wickets in the match which included 5-60 in the first innings and 7-71 in the second innings.

It was a very emotional moment for both of us -Bhupendra Jaiswal

“He called around 4:30 am in the morning (IST) after scoring his century (Day 2). He couldn’t hold back his tears. I cried too. It was a very emotional moment. He could not talk for a long time. He was tired. He just asked me ‘are you happy, father?’,” His father Bhupendra Jaiswal said. At the post-match presentation, here is what he said, “It felt very nice getting the Player-of-the-Match award on debut. It’s been a long journey, feeling very happy and good about it. Let’s see what the future holds for me, this is just the start (of my international career). Pray to God that I continue playing like this, keep making (such) efforts and keep contributing for the team,”

Some reports said that Jaiswal underwent intense preparation under Rajasthan Royals (RR) batting coach Zubin Bharucha. It also involved practising the same shot more than a hundred times a day to get the precision right. Jaiswal has also done well in the IPL for RR as he has scored 1172 runs in 37 games at an average of 32.55 and at a strike rate of 148.73.
