Nick Kyrgios said his winning streak coming to an end was the last of his worries. For him, not being able to see his sick mother is what is more difficult to bear. On Friday, Kyrgios suffered a 7-6 (4) 6-7 (5) 6-1 loss to Hubert Hurkacz in the Montreal Masters quarterfinal.
After winning the Citi Open in Washington and his opening three matches in Montreal, Kyrgios couldn’t beat Hurkacz and clinch his 10th consecutive win. Kyrgios’ mother is currently in hospital and he is planning to return to Australia after the US Open.
“I honestly don’t care [about the winning streak ending,” Kyrgios said after the match, per Tennis365. “I have been on the road for nearly three months and I’ve been away from home, away from my mom who is in hospital, away from my dad.
They’re not very well at the moment. So I don’t really care about no winning streak. When I am on the road I just want to put in good performances and make it worthwhile being here. I don’t care about records and that sort of stuff. I just want to make the most of my trip. I’ve got two more tournaments [Cincinnati and the US Open] left before I can go home”.
After two very tight first sets versus Hurkacz, Kyrgios was broken twice in the third set. No breaks were recorded in the first two sets, but then Kyrgios lost his serve twice in the third set. After losing the second set, Hurkacz took a lengthy bathroom break and Kyrgios cooled off while the Pole was away.
“My body hasn’t been feeling great the last week , when you stop playing for five, 10 minutes, it doesn’t help your body. My body was so stiff after that; I couldn’t move properly. My abdominal was hurting. It’s within the rules [toilet breaks], so I’m not going to complain. I just completely stiffened up,” He explained.
