‘It’s actually a really exciting time…’- Meg Lanning on the Women’s Indian T20 League auction amidst World Cup in South Africa
There is significant buzz and chip about the Women’s Indian T20 League, which is slated to be held in India in March. The five teams were announced recently as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore Lucknow, and Delhi bought the teams. In addition, Mumbai and Gujarat have finalised their coach staff and brought them on board.
The auction of the Women’s Indian T20 League will be happening amidst the Women’s 20-20 World Cup in South Africa. The World Cup is starting on February 10. The auction for the league will be held on February 13. Australia Women skipper Meg Lanning said that the players will find the auction an oddity while the World Cup goes on in South Africa.

“It’s a new experience for us and at the same time we are focusing on what we’re trying to do here which is the most important thing,” Lanning said when the captains met for a photo shoot in Cape Town sometime earlier. “There’s no right or wrong way to do that and every one individually will deal with it as they wish. I think it’s important that you’re always working as a team, but also letting people deal with it how they feel is best.”
Lanning further said that this is an exciting time for Women’s cricket as new opportunities have sprung up in the cricketing circuit with the arrival of the Women’s Indian T20 League. “As Sophie (Devine) said, it’s a little bit awkward, but it’s just trying to embrace that and understanding it’s actually a really exciting time and you actually don’t have a lot of control over most of it, so you’ve just got to wait and see. We’re just trying to focus as much as we can on the cricket here, that’s the most important thing,”
The Women’s Indian T20 league will be a five-team event. The tournament is slated to be played in March. The tournament will be played after the 20-20 World Cup in South Africa culminates. There could be a total of 22 matches played. Each squad will consist of 18 players with a total of five overseas players in the playing XI.
