‘It will be an emotional moment – Harmanpreet Kaur on Jhulan Goswami’s last hurrah at Lords
Harmanpreet Kaur got the Thor out and unleashed full fury on the English bowlers as she put them on the mat by smashing the bowlers all over in the 2nd ODI of their series. En route to a magnificent innings of 143 from 111 balls with 18 boundaries and 4 sixes, Harmanpreet took India to a series win against England after a long gap of 23 years. But come the third ODI at Lords, All the attention will be centred upon only one person. That person is Jhulan Goswami.
Goswami, who has been the torchbearer for Indian Women’s cricket all throughout her career, will retire after the final match. She will finish as the highest wicket-taker in the ODI format, with her currently tally reading 253 wickets in 203 games at an average of 22.1 and a stunning economy rate of 3.37.
She made her India debut in 2002 and has been playing for India for twenty years. Jhulan is also a person who can use the long handle down the order and is a reliable batter as well. Goswami has also played 12 Tests and 68 T20Is for India. It will be a fantastic present for her in her last game if India whitewashes England 3-0 at Lords.
Harmanpreet Kaur, the skipper of the Indian Women’s side, had only huge words of appreciation to say for Jhulan Goswami, who has been a livewire in and around the Indian Team. She can cheer up anyone on the team if they are having a bad day and she has always put her best foot forward to motivate the side at all times.
“The Lord’s game is very special for us because it’s Jhulan’s retirement and we wanted to enjoy that game without any pressure and I’m really happy that we were able to win today and now we can just have fun in that game. It’s very important because that will be her last game. It will be a very emotional moment for all of us and we definitely want to win that game,” Harmanpreet told in the post-match conference.
“When you win the first game, the second game is always important and we always try to finish that game as a winning side and today also we were looking at that only because we don’t want to carry any extra pressure on ourselves going to Lord’s. Moreover after winning the series, now we just want to have fun because I know it’s the last game for her. We will definitely look to win that game but moreover, we will just go and have fun there.”
“She’s someone who has taught us a lot. When I debuted she was a leader and I learned a lot from her and now our young bowlers, like Renuka [Singh] and Meghna Singh.. they are also learning from her. They are learning how she bowls and getting that rhythm from her. She’s been a great inspiration for all of us and we’ve learned a lot from her,” she added.
