Amidst a lot of hue and cry that Sanju Samson should replace Suryakumar Yadav in ODIs, Kapil Dev has a different take. He has rubbished claims that Samson should replace Suryakumar in the ODI setup. The right-handed batter had a woeful ODI series against Australia. He registered three consecutive golden ducks in the three ODI’s against Australia.

No runs behind Suryakumar have led to many questioning his place in the ODI side. While Suryakumar has three centuries in T20Is, In 50 over cricket he seems a pale shade of himself. The Indian selectors did not name a replacement for Shreyas Iyer when he was ruled out of the ODI series with a back injury. Here is what Kapil said on ABP news.

The comparisons should not happen – Kapil Dev on the issue

“A cricketer who has played so well will always get more chances. Don’t compare Surya with Sanju Samson, it doesn’t seem right. If Sanju goes through a bad phase then you will talk about somebody else.” Kapil said “This should not happen. If the team management has decided to back Suryakumar Yadav then he should be given more chances. Yes, people will talk, give their opinion but ultimately it’s the management’s call,” He added.

Suryakumar has scored 433 runs in 23 ODI games. He has an average of 24.05 and at a strike rate of 102.12. The right-handed batter has scored two half-centuries in ODIs. In the third ODI against Australia, Suryakumar was demoted to number 7 in the Indian batting order. It did not make any difference as he fell to Ashton Agar first ball. While some saw it as a sign of no confidence, Kapil said India would have wanted to groom Suryakumar as a finisher in ODIs.

“It’s very easy to talk after the match is finished. Maybe the idea behind sending Suryakumar at No.7 was to give him an opportunity as a finisher. This (shuffling of the batting order) is nothing new in ODIs.” The Men in Blue lost to the Kangaroos by 21 runs in the third ODI at Chennai. India were defeated by Australia by a 2-1 margin. The Kangaroos became the number one ranked side in ODIs after winning the series.
