In the IPL 2023 match on Wednesday in Mohali, Mumbai Indians took on the Punjab Kings at the PCA IS Bindra stadium. Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first and it was proving to be the right decision after the first 10 overs. They had scalped two wickets and were looking to scalp a few more to put more pressure on the home side.

After 10 overs, Punjab Kings had 78/2 and were anticipating a low total. However, they managed to score 136 runs off the final 10 overs. Everything began with Akash Madhwal’s opening over, in which he gave up 16 runs. Even though Short was dismissed by Chawla in the next over, Jitesh’s arrival provided Livingstone with exactly the right amount of vigour.

In the 13th over, Jitesh faced only two balls before taking on Archer and getting 21 out of the over to give the home team some momentum that never stopped. Archer had to face his most expensive spell in the IPL when Livingstone blasted him with a hat-trick of sixes during the penultimate over. This meant that Punjab Kings had put on a daunting total of 214/3 in their 20 overs.

How did the Mumbai Indians’ chase pan out?

Mumbai got off to a bad start in the chase and lost their captain Rohit Sharma for zero. Before getting out to his Australian compatriot Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green scored a rusty 23. They were in need of a big partnership and they had some hope with two Indian team superstars Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan at the crease.

Mumbai Indians kept the necessary run rate as they were chasing a mammoth 215 against Punjab Kings. Shikhar Dhawan was frantically trying to find a breakthrough as Suryakumar Yadav as well as Ishan Kishan, both had already smashed fifty and were scoring runs quickly.

Suryakumar Yadav was removed first for 66 runs in Nathan Ellis’ final over but had done his damage alongside Ishan Kishan, who was removed for 74 by Arshdeep Singh in the following over. Punjab smelt a comeback but that hope was eradicated by Tilak Varma and Tim David as they were able to take their side home with 7 balls remaining. Mumbai Indians were able to chase a 200+ total again as they overcame a valiant Punjab Kings side.
