After their heartbreaking two-wicket loss in the opening Ashes Test at Edgbaston, coach Brendon McCullum predicts England will play “harder” against Australia. He said while speaking to the BBC, “”I’m sure they’ll stick to that strategy, which is great because we’ll go a little harder.”

With a 55-run partnership in the ninth wicket, Pat Cummins as well as Nathan Lyon helped Australia reach their goal of 281. England and Australia tried to be more aggressive throughout the first Test, while England tried to be more conservative.

In the second Test, which gets underway next Wednesday at Lord’s, England will try to tie the series. Since McCullum alongside captain Ben Stokes stepped over at the very start of last summer, England has only lost three times in 14 Test matches.

“The way that we played validated our style of play”: Brendon McCullum

McCullum thinks England’s strategy was supported by how close they were to defeat the world Test champions during their most recent series with Australia, which took place down under 18 months ago and resulted in a 4-0 loss for England.

The former New Zealand opener spoke about their style of play. He said, “The way that we played validated our style of play. If we’d have got a little bit of the rub of the green then we might have been on the other side of it. The guys are proud of the efforts that they put in and I’m sure we’ll go to Lord’s with a lot of confidence.”

The first day’s 78 overs saw England declare the Ashes Test at their earliest-ever score of 393-8. McCullum said, “We always want to try to take the game forward. We want to try to seize opportunities where we think we can put opposition teams under pressure. Obviously, you’d rather have won the game – that’s just the nature of sport sometimes. If we’d have got a little bit of the rub of the green then we might have been on the other side of it.”

Eight lost opportunities in the field of play, four of which were due to mistakes by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, cost England the game in such a close contest. The New Zealand International backed Jonny Bairstow and said that “They were pretty tough mistakes,” said McCullum, who played 101 Tests for New Zealand. I’ve kept it over here before, it’s not the easiest place to keep it. I actually thought Jonny kept really well right throughout. If you look at the way he progressed throughout the game, he found a natural rhythm.”
