In what is bad news for Kolkata and Indian fans, Shreyas Iyer will miss the Indian T20 League 2023, according to reports. He will miss the tournament due to a back injury. Iyer will not be part of the Test Championship final. This means Kolkata are presently without a captain and have not named a replacement for Iyer. There are some reports saying that Nitish Rana might lead the side. Iyer’s debut for Kolkata in the Indian T20 League was not a good one.

Kolkata finished 7th on the points table in 2022. The franchise had six wins and eight losses. The side finished on 12 points. A lot of experts in the 2022 edition had said Kolkata were guilty of chopping and changing the side too much which led to their downfall. The franchise have bolstered their squad with the likes of Shardul Thakur, Rahamanullah Gurbaz and Lockie Ferguson through the trading window.

The Indian Test middle order looks bleak without the services of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant

The side also have the likes of David Wiese and the Bangladesh duo of Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das. Shakib has long history with Kolkata and has helped the franchise to win two titles in 2012 and 2014.  Iyer’s absence means Kolkata will not have a good Indian middle-order batter who can play spin. Last season in 2o22, he scored 401 runs with an average of 30.84 and a strike rate of 134.56. The right-hander had scored three fifties in 2022 for Kolkata.

With Iyer also reportedly missing the Test Championship final, there will be a void in the middle order of the Indian side. Iyer has scored 666 runs in 10 Tests with an average of 44.40 and a strike rate of 65.81. The Indian batter had also missed the limited-overs series against New Zealand due to the same injury.

The Indian Test team is not looking potent and threatening as before. The side does not have the likes of Rishabh Pant and now Shreyas Iyer. It still remains to be seen whether Jasprit Bumrah will make in time for the Test Championship final at the Oval in which will be held between June 7 to June 11.
