A massive contingent of 45 Indian players will embark on a multi-format tour of South Africa, commencing on December 10. The tour will feature distinct squads for each format, with some players rested following the grueling World Cup campaign and others granted opportunities due to an increased emphasis on Tests and T20 internationals over ODIs.

To accommodate this strategic approach, each format will have its own designated captain. Rohit Sharma will assume command in Tests, KL Rahul will lead the ODI charge, and Suryakumar Yadav will take the helm in the dynamic T20I arena.

This decision has sparked a debate about the effectiveness of split captaincy, with some questioning its suitability for a country like India. While proponents argue that specialized leadership can enhance performance in each format, opponents express concerns about potential coordination challenges and a dilution of authority.

Remember, back in 2017, when he quit India’s limited overs captaincy, MS Dhoni said that split captaincy is not a viable option in India. “I don’t believe in split captaincy. For the team there has to be only one leader. Split captaincy doesn’t work in India. I was waiting for the right time. I wanted Virat to ease into the job,” he had said at the time.

“I believe it’s better if doesn’t happen”

Former Indian pacer Irfan Pathan stands firmly against the implementation of split captaincy in Indian cricket, expressing his hope that it will not be adopted. He contends that the system is unnecessary given the versatility of most Indian players, with only a few exceptions.

“There has been talk for a long time about whether we can do split captaincy. It’s true workload management has been done here and that is why you are seeing such big squads and different captains. It’s clear that Rohit Sharma had to take a break from white-ball cricket, so you are not seeing him there. You are seeing him as the captain for Test cricket. However, you might see these things going forward. You might even see different coaches for different formats. I believe it’s better if it doesn’t happen in our culture,” he said.
