International Tennis Federation name their players of year 2023
Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka are named the players of the year by the International Tennis Federation for 2023. The two athletes were without a doubt, the best players of Tennis in the year in men’s and women’s categories. The accomplishments of both the star players speak for themselves. They achieved a lot more than other players in the year 2023 and remained consistent for the entire year.
Novak Djokovic started the year with a bang. In his favourite tournament, the Australian Open, Djokovic won his record 10th title. No player has more titles at the Australian Open than Djokovic in the men’s singles category. In the French Open 2023, Djokovic was again the star as he won his third title at the event. In the process, Djokovic became the only singles player in the open era to win each Grand Slam event at least thrice.
At the Wimbledon, the 36-year-old came so close to winning the title, only to be beaten by Carlos Alcaraz. But he soon made his comeback by winning the US Open. In the process, Djokovic became the men’s singles player with the most number of Grand Slam titles. The Serbian now has 24 Grand Slam titles to his name. The Serbian star player had a stellar year in the ATP finals as well.
Sabalenka’s year in the women’s singles category
The 36-year-old won the record 7th title in ATP finals, a new record in Tennis. Djokovic became the player with the most nominations for the award (8 times) and established his legacy. On the other hand, Sabalenka won the award in the women’s category. The Belarusian won the award after winning her maiden Grand Slam at the Australian Open earlier this year.
Sabalenka made it to the final of the US Open 2023. She also made it to the semifinals of the French Open 2023 and Wimbledon 2023. Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram claimed the award in the men’s doubles category. The duo won their third consecutive US Open title. In the women’s doubles category, the pair of Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter claimed the award for the year 2023.
