One of the favourites to take over in Iyer’s absence was veteran West Indian spinner, Sunil Narine. Narine led the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (ADKR) in the just-finished ILT20 in the UAE. He was the primary architect behind Kolkata’s two championship campaigns in 2012 and 2014. ADKR only managed one victory in ten games, placing them last in the standings. Despite this, Narine was praised as the finest option due to his background playing in T20 competitions worldwide. But, because the choice has already been decided, it is unclear how Nitish Rana would perform in his role as Kolkata captain in the 2023 ITL.
