With India crushing Bangladesh in the second Test by 3 wickets, one has to agree that they have solidified their chances of securing a spot in the finals of the Test championship. To add more, it was Ravichandran Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer who guided the KL Rahul-led team to a massive win with a 71-run stand for the 8th wicket, chasing a target of 145 on December 25, Sunday, of the second Test that kicked off on Thursday.

The Indian team were staring at a possible defeat on the back of a five-for from Mehidy Hasan, eventually restricting the Indian team to 74/7 in no time. However, an unbeaten 42 from Ashwin and an unbeaten 29 from Iyer saw the Indian team breach past the target within the first session on Day 4.

India’s chances for playing in their second Test championship finals

As things stand, post their 2-0 series win against the Bangla Tigers, India ended up on the Test championship points table with 58.92 PCT (Points Percentage System), with South Africa standing third below India in the points table with 55.76 PCT. With India yet to play the Border-Gavaskar trophy set to take place in March, their 2-0 win against the Bangladeshi team have given them a major boost in the points table.

Now for India to safely get past the Proteas, they would need to defeat Australia 4-0 in the Border-Gavaskar trophy, as the Indian camp would end up with 68.05 PCT. In this case, if at all South Africa manage to win all of their remaining four matches, they would only end up with 66.66 PCT, crashing out for the Test championship summit clash race.

If India manage to win the series against the Baggy Greens 3-0, they would end up with 64.35 PCT, forcing South Africa to win all of their remaining matches to secure the final spot. If the Indian brigade win the Border-Gavaskar trophy 3-1, they would end up with 62.5 PCT and the Proteas would qualify only if they win all of their four matches, in order to end up with 66.66 PCT.
