‘India ne lajawaab pradarshan dikha diya’ – Fans buzzing as India boss Day 1 of Nagpur Test against Australia
India and Australia squared off against each other at the VCA stadium in Nagpur. Australia won the toss and chose to bat first. There were a lot of questions coming into the Test match about the pitch. Some Australian journalists alleged pitch doctoring.
India got off to a fabulous start and dismissed the openers Usman Khawaja and David Warner. Khawaja fell lbw to Siraj, while Mohammed Shami dismissed David Warner with a peach of delivery. The Kangaroos were left reeling at 2-2.
Then, it was the Australian’s turn to dominate as Marnus Labuschagne made a fine 49 off 123 balls with eight fours. He was, eventually, stumped by Srikar Bharat of Ravindra Jadeja. Steven Smith also was dismissed by Jadeja soon after he scored 37 off 107 with seven fours.
Jadeja got 5-47 and marked an impressive comeback after injury. Matt Renshaw fell for a duck to Jadeja. Peter Handscomb and Alex Carey played some good shots and reverse sweeps in a nice partnership that threatened briefly but once they were dismissed by Jadeja and by Ashwin respectively, the match went only in one direction.
Ashwin became the second fastest bowler to pick up 450 Test wickets
When the off spinner dismissed Alex Carey, he became the second fastest bowler to reach the landmark of 450 Test wickets after the great Muttiah Muralitharan. Ashwin picked up 3-42 in his 15 over spell and made a mark.
Australia folded up for 177 as they were no match for the spin duo. The first innings ended in 63.5 overs. When the Indian’s came out to bat, they knew they needed a solid start to dictate proceedings. Rohit Sharma made a fine unbeaten 56 off 69 balls with nine fours and one six.
KL Rahul made a laborious innings of 20 off 71 balls with one four. He could have ended the day unscathed, but he was dismissed by Australia’s latest spin sensation Todd Murphy. Ashwin came in as night watchman and played five balls. India ended the day on 77-1 and are trailing by 100 runs. Let us take a look at the reactions here:
India need to bat big here. Not only will that help in the context of this match (having to bat last on a turning pitch) but will also shut up all the expert talk on the nature of pitch. #INDvsAUS #BGT2023

Rare instances when you see the nightwatchman get out to let the main batter walk in at 1-down.#INDvsAUS #BorderGavaskarTrophy

Luck favours the brave. That’s the case with @ImRo45 who got many lose deliveries. On the other hand @klrahul was in shel with extensive defensive approach. That has cost him his wicket. Guess it will be the end of red ball #Cricket fr him. #BGT #INDvsAUS

Australia 177/10 vs Ind 77/1 at the end of Day 1 of 1st #INDvsAUS test. Too much mind games leaves Australia confused and they started seeing demons on the pitch when the demons were enjoying the match from the peepal tree. Bowling by Jadeja and then Rohit Sharma bossing the bat. pic.twitter.com/OUIS85ISGQ
