In what is a remarkable achievement, India’s 24-year-old Shubman Gill has ascended to the pinnacle of the Men’s ODI Rankings, dethroning Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who had held the top spot for 951 days. This is testimony to Gill’s meteoric rise in the international circuit, especially in the 50-over format. Babar’s numbers have also seen a dip in recent times which helped to amplify the cause.

Gill’s exploits in the ODI arena have been nothing short of sensational. In 41 games, he has amassed 2136 runs at an average of more than 60. He also has a strike rate of over 100 which proves that he has been on fire and that his runs have not come at a compromise. While Gill’s achievement is a massive personal triumph for him, it is also a source of immense pride for India. He becomes the fourth Indian batter to top the batting charts after Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.

Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj
Shubman Gill has become the fourth Indian batter to be ranked number 1 in ODIs.

Meanwhile, India’s pace sensation, Mohammed Siraj has reclaimed his position as the top-ranked ODI bowler in the world. Siraj had previously held the top spot in January 2023, but he couldn’t stay there for too long. However, Siraj’s impressive performances in the last couple of World Cup games have helped him regain his place at the top of the rankings. Three other Indian bowlers also feature in the Top 10. The outstanding performances of Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami in recent times, particularly in the ongoing World Cup, have earned them spots among the top 10 bowlers.

The latest rankings have also been fruitful for Virat Kohli as he has jumped three places to the fourth spot, just behind Quinton de Kock. Another Indian batter, Shreyas Iyer has also made moves as he is now on 18th spot. India have dominated the latest rankings and the fans are understandably delighted.
