A few records for India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will be on the line in Ahmedabad against Australia with the four-match series at stake. The spinner is just 10 wickets away from reaching 700 wickets for India in international cricket. In the longest format, the 36-year-old has 467 wickets to his name. In ODIs, Ashwin has claimed 151 victims for the two-time world champions.

In a match where experienced Australian spinner Nathan Lyon’s eight-wicket haul completely changed the outcome, spin wizard Ravichandran Ashwin only succeeded in taking four wickets, and Australia went on to defeat Rohit Sharma’s team spectacularly in Indore. By partnering with seasoned pacer Umesh Yadav, spinner Ashwin had caused Australia’s batting downfall in the first innings.

Records that Ashwin can break in the 4th Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

The right-arm off spinner has taken 72 wickets in T20I games as well. If the spinner manages to take 10 wickets in the series finale at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ashwin will become just the third Indian bowler to reach 700 wickets in international cricket. Only two Indian bowlers, legendary spinners Anil Kumble (956 and Harbhajan Singh (711) have achieved this exceptional accomplishment in international cricket.

Intriguingly, Ashwin is just 4 wickets short of matching Anil Kumble’s record haul against Australia in the truest format of the game. In his successful Test career, former India captain Kumble picked up 111 wickets against the Baggy Greens. Kumble has taken the most wickets for India in Test cricket history. With the Asian heavyweights, the spin legend took 619 wickets in 132 Test matches. Earlier, even though James Anderson of England and India’s off-spinner Ashwin were tied for first place in the ICC rankings for Test bowlers, Ashwin dropped six rating points.

India is currently leading the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2-1 and still enter the final Test match in Ahmedabad as favourites even after the visitors got a famous victory in Indore in the third Test. A win in the fourth Test would guarantee India a place in the Test Championship final which will be played at the Oval against Australia in June.
