“I had literally got goosebumps when Neeraj Chopra got it (gold medal) in Olympics, so we have an opportunity to be there and triumph,” the 26-year old said in a press conference ahead of the team’s departure to Birmingham for the Games.
“All the girls in the team are already excited (about the CWG 2022). We all know the feeling we have watched CWG and the Olympics on TV. When the Indian flag goes higher, we hear the national anthem, everyone knows the feeling. We are going for Gold in Birmingham; we are not just looking for a podium finish,” she said.
Smriti Mandhana had an unusual amount of energy in her voice and sounding very excited and talked at length about the India flag. Also, cricket being part of the games is a first, and if a medal is won in cricket by the Women in Blue, it will arouse the nation collectively and also add to the overall medal tally of the country.
“Because when the flag goes higher and when the national anthem is played, that is the best feeling. I literally got goosebumps when Neeraj Chopra won gold in Olympics. We have an opportunity to be there and try to that.”
Neeraj Chopra and Smriti Mandhana are two inspiring personalities who helped harbor the ambitions of a nation over a long period. Neeraj Chopra’s Olympic gold was a historic moment in Indian sport and Smriti Mandhana has got the right source of inspiration to achieve the same in CWG 2022 when cricket will come into the games.
