‘Hum sab ek saat (17) hai’ – Fans admire Delhi’s thoughtful gesture of hanging Rishabh Pant’s jersey in dugout

Delhi kick off their ITL 2023 campaign against Lucknow on Saturday

The Indian T20 League 2023 featured a doubleheader on Day 2 of the tournament as Kolkata and Punjab geared up in Mohali. At the same time, Lucknow and Delhi awaited the end of the action in Punjab to get started at Ekana Sports City. Delhi were missing their star wicketkeeper batter, Rishabh Pant, who is recovering from injuries he sustained in an unfortunate car accident.

The Delhi squad discovered their unique way of sending their message to Rishabh Pant. The Delhi dugout featured a Rishabh Pant jersey hanging to the roof. Many lauded the symbolic gesture as it sparked a mini storm on Twitter.

Punjab beat Kolkata by 7 runs (DLS) in the day’s first game

The tournament saw a grand opening ceremony in Ahmedabad followed by an intense match between MS Dhoni-led Chennai and defending champions Gujarat that stretched itself to the final over. Gujarat, chasing a target of 179 runs, made the chase look very easy in the end, reaching home with four balls remaining.

In Saturday’s first game, Punjab defeated Kolkata by 7 runs through the DLS method. Kolkata won the toss and invited Punjab to bat first. With the ball, Tim Southee remained the pick of the bowlers for Kolkata, returning with two scalps despite going for a hefty 54 runs in his four overs.

In reply, Kolkata lost regular wickets. Impact player Venkatesh Iyer with 34 off 28, and Andre Russell, with 35 off 19, tried to steady up the Kolkata innings. But they could only reach 146/7 in 16 overs when rain interrupted play.

Regarding the game between Delhi and Lucknow, Lucknow rode on opener Kyle Mayers’s quickfire 73 off 38 and Nicholas Pooran’s impactful 36 off 21 to set Delhi a challenging target of 194 runs. Khaleel Ahmed remained the pick of the bowlers returning with figures of 2/30 from four overs.
