‘Hitman contribution?’ – Fans react as Rohit Sharma says Gabba Test is best match India has ever played
Team India’s win in Gabba, Brisbane, in the Border Gavaskar trophy 2020/21 is one of the greatest Test wins of all time. Australia as a team had not lost a Test at the venue since 1988. Team India did not have the likes of Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, and many other regular players due to injuries and other reasons.
Ajinkya Rahane led a side that was very inexperienced, especially the bowling attack, which had a combined 5 international caps, of which Shardul Thakur had bowled only 14 deliveries before the match. Mohammad Siraj was the leader of the attack in just his third international Test. The other bowlers in the attack were Navdeep Saini, T Natarajan, and Washington Sundar.
Australia, on the other hand, played a full-strength side. The bowling attack had the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon. Winning a Test match against any Australian team by team is usually difficult. But given the constraints, it was nearly impossible for the Indian team to win the Test match. Yet, the fighting spirit of the team was on display.
Fighting spirit of the Indian team
Despite getting reduced to 186/6 replying to Australia’s 369 in the first innings, the duo of Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar played a rescue act for ages. Mohammad Siraj claimed his maiden 5-wicket haul in Tests in the second innings. 328 was the target for India, which was never achieved by an Indian team in Australia. Young batters like Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Washington Sundar, along with experienced ones like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, played sensational knocks and helped India to script a sensational win.
Talking about it, the Indian captain Rohit Sharma said “Gabba Test match is the best Test India has ever played. With 8-9 players injured, most difficult conditions, youngsters coming in against strong Australia and won there which was unbelievable” and praised the achievement of the Indian team in the series against Australia.
