‘Held their nerve when it mattered’ – Fans react as Jamaica Tallawahs beat St Lucia Kings by 11 runs in opening game of CPL 2023
The Caribbean Premier League started off on a great note as the first match took place between the St Lucia Kings (SLK) and Jamaica Tallawahs (JT). SLK won the toss and opted to bowl first. JLT got off to a great start as Krik McKenzie hit 20 off 11 balls with two fours and one six. He was caught by Faf du Plessis off Roston Chase with the score at 44. Samarh Brooks was the next to go at 62 for just 12 off 12 balls with one six. After this, there was a middle-order collapse.
Amir Jangoo, Raymon Reifer and Fabian Allen all departed back to the dugout for not too many. At the other end, skipper Brandon King was going all guns blazing despite wickets falling around him. The right-hander continued his great form from the Indian series and cracked a stroke-filled 81 off 53 balls with nine fours and three sixes. The death bowling was good from SLK as JT ended their 20 overs on 187. Roston Chase was the pick of the bowlers for SLK as he scalped 3-39 in his four overs.
Roston Chase hit 53 off 31 balls for St Lucia Kings
Alzarri Joseph took 2-21 in his four overs spell. Matthew Forde took 1 for 22 in his three overs. JT with the help of King’s efforts would have felt that they have got enough in the tank going into the second innings. in the second innings, they did not get off to the best of starts as Du Plessis fell for 9 off 8 balls with one four. He was the first wicket to fall. Johnson Charles made 24 off 22 balls with one four and one six. Sean Williams came in at number three and hit 26 off 22 balls with one four and two sixes.
Chase came at number four and smashed an entertaining 53 off 31 balls with four fours and three sixes. After Sikandar Raza and Kimani Melius fell in quick succession at five and six, Roshan Primus came in at number seven and hit 37 off 20 balls with four fours and two sixes. But he was run out at the wrong time a good death bowling performance from JLT meant that they won a close encounter by 11 runs. Imad Wasim was the best bowler for JLT as he took 3-27 in his four overs.
