Arjun Tendulkar scored his maiden first-class century on Wednesday as he played a magnificent innings of 120 runs off 207 balls for Goa on his Ranji Trophy Debut. The 23-year-old emulated his cricketing legend father Sachin Tendulkar’s feat, who also achieved the same 34 years back. Sachin had scored his maiden first-class century on debut for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in 1988, against Gujarat, as a 15-year-old.

Recently, Sachin opened up on his son’s achievement and said that being the child of a famous cricketer, the 23-year-old did not lead a ‘normal childhood’ and asked people not to put unnecessary pressure on his child.

“Arjun has not led a normal childhood; being a son of a cricketer who has been for quite some time, it is not so easy and that is the only reason when I retired and was facilitated by the media in Mumbai, my message to them was: allow Arjun to fall in love with cricket, give him that opportunity,” Sachin was quoted as saying to Infosys at 40.

“You can follow up with various statements after he has performed. Don’t put pressure on him because I never had pressure from my parents,” he added.

“My parents gave me the freedom to go out and express myself, there was no pressure of expectations. It was only encouragement and support and how could we go and better ourselves and that is what I wanted him to do. I kept telling him that it’s going to be challenging,” Sachin explained.

Arjun Tendulkar had a good white-ball domestic season

Sachin also recalled an emotional moment with his father, Ramesh Tendulkar, and said, “As a father I remember my father telling someone (when I started playing for India) that being called as Sachin’s father made him immensely proud. He then told his friend that to be recognised for what your child has done is a special feeling.”

Arjun had a decent white-ball season. At the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s, he picked up ten wickets in seven matches with an impressive economy rate of 5.69. He was Goa’s second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament behind Lakshay Garg. Arjun also played in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he was Goa’s leading wicket-taker, returning seven wickets in eight outings at an average of 32.37 and an economy rate of 4.98.
