‘He can become an all-format player for India’- Former India cricketer believes Shubman Gill has potential of Virat Kohli
Shubman Gill showed why he was the rising star of Indian cricket with a sensational innings at Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad. Gill smashed 126 off 63 balls, with 12 fours and seven sixes. He obliterated the Kiwi bowling attack and pressed them into submission. He joined the likes of KL Rahul, Suresh Raina and others to have scored a hundred in all formats of the game.
India then dismissed New Zealand for 66 in 12.1 overs which paved the way for an enormous win for India. The 168-run victory was the biggest winning margin in a T20I between two full-member nations. 66 was also the third-lowest T20I total for New Zealand. Gill also brought up the highest score by an Indian in T20I cricket as he eclipsed Virat Kohli’s record of an unbeaten 122 off 61 balls against Afghanistan in 2022.
Gill has converted his performances – Irfan Pathan
“The way he is batting, I am a huge fan of his. I am repeatedly saying that he can become an all-format player for you. Virat Kohli ruled all formats for many years, this batter has as much potential. To convert that into performance is a different thing.” Irfan Pathan said about Gill and also raised comparisons to Virat Kohli.
“That happens with time but Shubman Gill has started to do that. He scored his first century in August. Gill has now scored a total of six centuries in international cricket and we have just started February, where all other players have scored just four international centuries. Irfan talked about Gill’s superb form with the bat in the white ball game over the last few innings.
He made his first ODI century against Zimbabwe in 2022, and since then he has hit three ODI tons to his name. Not to forget his maiden Test century against Bangladesh, which helped India take the tests 2-0. Now he has silenced all his critics with a wonderful T20I masterclass that has made everyone sit up and take notice. The man from Punjab is telling everyone that he is there for the long haul.
