The action returned with a doubleheader on Sunday in the ongoing sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The day’s first game featured the Royal Challengers Bangalore taking on the Rajasthan Royals in the infamous Royal Derby of IPL 2023, hosted by the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The day’s second game will see Kolkata Knight Riders play hosts to Chennai Super Kings in a high-octane clash at the Eden Gardens of Kolkata.
Rajasthan Royals won the toss, and skipper Sanju Samson asked the home team to bat first. The Royal Challengers went off to a horrible start losing their stand-in skipper Virat Kohli in the very first ball of the match delivered by Trent Boult. Impact player Faf du Plessis, 62 off 39 and Glenn Maxwell, 77 off 44, repaired the innings for the home team, taking the total to 189/9 in 20 overs.
For the visitors, Trent Boult remained the pick of the bowlers returning with figures of 2/41 in four overs. Sandeep Sharma also returned with two scalps but conceded eight extra runs compared to Boult. Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal’s spin duo returned with one wicket apiece.
In reply, Rajasthan’s start saw them lose star opener Jos Butler for a two-ball duck. However, his partner Yashasvi Jaiswal (47 off 37) and top order batter Devdutt Padikkal (52 off 34) brought the visitor’s innings back on track. Final flourishes by Sanju Samson (22 off 15) and Dhruv Jurel (34 off 16) could not take the Royals over the finish line as they fell 8 runs short of the target. Harshal Patel remained the pick of the bowlers for RCB with figures of 3/32 in four overs.
Next, in the sixteenth edition of the lucrative league, the Sunrisers Hyderabad will take on Delhi Capitals at the former’s home. Sunrisers will look to shake off their recent loss to Chennai Super Kings, their second consecutive defeat after a flurry of two wins. On the other hand, DC have just won their first game of the campaign against the Kolkata Knight Riders and will be looking to continue the winning momentum.
