The 2001 Test series between India and Australia has been one of the most memorable moments in the history of cricket. Even after 21 years since its conclusion, Indian fans still cherish it. It is predominantly known for the historic Kolkata Test which the Asian Team won despite following on. Also, after this game, they broke an unbeaten streak of the then Steve Waugh-led side as they were the number one team at that time.

Not to forget, the hosts were trailing in the three-match series by 0-1 after losing in Mumbai by 10 wickets. Meanwhile, Harbhajan Singh, who was part of the team at that time, has opened up about how the then skipper Sourav Ganguly backed the former. Singh revealed that if the Bengal player hadn’t backed him, the latter would have been sacked from the captaincy.

Toh woh captaani se hat jate. I think then he would not have been able to win the series against Australia. If we would not have won the series, then Dada would not have been there. It’s like God sent Sourav Ganguly for me, telling ‘hold this kid’s hand.’ He held my hand and I held God’s hand. And I kept doing my work. That is how I made my name and Sourav Ganguly also won a big series, due to which he got an extension in captaincy,” Harbhajan said in an interview with Sportskeeda Cricket.

The 103-Test veteran added that he is thankful to Ganguly for backing him. The 41-year-old also acknowledged that a player’s performance makes their careers special. He also said that the current BCCI president gave him the opportunity at the right time.

“Yes, he supported me, there is no doubt about that. I am always thankful for that. But side by side it’s your performance that makes your career special. Captain can give you one opportunity, that Sourav Ganguly gave me at the right time. It was a difficult period for me. After that it’s on the person on how he performs,” Harbhajan said.
