‘Great to see money pumped into sports to achieve excellence’- Fans excited to see a massive increase in sports budget
The Sports Ministry has set aside a record sum of 3,397.32 crore INR for the fiscal year 2023-24. This is the biggest sum of money put into the sports sector. Compared to last year it is a 334.72 crore increase. This allocation has been done keeping in mind big sporting events like the 2024 Paris Olympics and the Asian Games.
The Khelo India games, which are the games played by the youth at the school level and college level and are also one of the pet projects of the ministry, have been given 1045 crore. In the 2021-22 budget, 2,757.02 crores were allocated. In the 2022-23 timeline, the sports ministry received 3,062.60 crores, which was a 305.58 crore increase.
Here are the bifurcations –
Out of the 1045 crore that has been set aside for Khelo India, the Sports Authority of India has been handed over 785.52 crore. 325 crore will go to the National Sports Federation and 15 crores will be in the hands of the National Sports development fund. National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) will get Rs 21.73 crore, with the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) having Rs 19.50 crore in its kitty.
Khel India has a 439 crore increase from last year for 606 crores allocated previously
Khelo India got a big jump to 1045 crore after being assigned 606 crores last year, which is effectively 439 crore in additional funds for this flagship project of the government. This is certainly a step in the right direction, with the government pinning its hopes to unearth World beaters across all sports so that it will give India a better chance of competing at the Commonwealth Games or the Asian Games and the Olympics so to speak.
This is also a signal that the government wants to tap into the sporting culture of the country and make it an avenue of livelihood. Primarily in a country like India, education has been given more importance over sports, but now things are changing for good. A sizable chunk of Rs 13 crore for the National Centre of Sports Science and Research will help Indian athletes to get the latest know-how on the best techniques to train.

The Union Budget has earmarked more for the promotion of sports in the country, including for the Khelo India Scheme which aims to broadbase sports and achieve excellence as well for the Assistance to National Sports Federations (read support for athletes). pic.twitter.com/rXHMMd8piw
