‘Great Game’ – Twitter goes bonkers as India register close 16-run win vs South Africa in second T20I
The second T20I between India and South Africa took place at the Baraspara Cricket Stadium against India and South Africa. South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl on a pitch that looked destined for run-scoring. India were off to a great start with a superb opening partnership between KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma of 96 for the 1st wicket.
Rahul scored a superb 57 from 28 balls with five fours and four sixes, Rohit also scored 43 off 37 with seven fours and a six. Keshav Maharaj was the pick of the South African bowlers, getting the scalps of both the openers as he went for 23 runs in his 4 overs.
After the fall of the openers, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav took charge, and they plundered the bowling attack of South Africa as both the batters attacked from both ends. Suryakumar was very much in the groove as he played some outstanding shots throughout his innings and scored a superlative 61 from just 22 balls with five fours and five sixes. Kohli played a perfect second fiddle as he took his time to get going and gave more of the strike to Suryakumar initially. The former India captain changed gears once he was set.
Kohli scored a superlative 49 from 28 balls with seven boundaries and a maximum. Dinesh Karthik provided the perfect finish by playing a blitz of 17 off 7 with one four and two sixes. This allowed India to get to a big score of 237-3 in their 20 overs.
In the second innings, South Africa were off to a poor start, as the out-of-form skipper Temba Bavuma departed for a seven-ball duck, and Rilee Rossouw also perished for a knot after trying to hit Arshdeep Singh straight down the ground. Arshdeep’s 2 wickets in his opening over took the score to 1-2.
A floodlight went out which caused a delay in proceedings and when the resumption happened the Proteas came out all guns blazing as Aiden Markram launched into the India attack. He was dismissed by Axar Patel after playing a good-looking 33 off 19 with four fours and a six.
With the score at 47-3, Quinton de Kock and David Miller took matters into their own hands and tore the Indian bowling attack to shreds as de Kock played a cracking innings of 69 off 43 with three fours and four sixes. Miller smashed a superb 106 from 47 balls with eight fours and seven fours which took South Africa close to the target but they eventually fell short by 17 runs.
