The auction for the media rights of the Indian T20 League was a big hit as it attracted large bids from popular names in the media industry. The media rights for the next four-year cycle for the T20 extravaganza were sold for a whopping INR 48,390 crores. The BCCI along with all the ten franchises will be the biggest gainers from this lucrative deal.
According to InsideSport, in 2022, the franchise media rights share was Rs 201.65 crore. From 2023, each franchise will make 436.6 crores from the same component, hence doubling their revenue. By 2027 the share of the media rights is expected to grow to 554.6 crores.
“Along with all others, franchise partners are our biggest stakeholders. When BCCI gets benefitted, it’s obvious the biggest stakeholder will also benefit. We are happy that we could provide growth and deliver on our promises to Indian T20 League Owners,” said Arun Dhumal after the Indian T20 League Media Rights Tender as quoted by InsideSport.
This year the media rights were auctioned in four packages. Package A which offered broadcast rights for the games was sold to Disney Star for INR 23,575 crores. Package B which offered digital streaming rights was won by Viacom 18 for 20,500 crores.
Package C which offered the weekend double header games and the four playoffs was sold to Viacom 18 for 3,273 crores. Package D which offered overseas TV and digital rights were sold to Viacom 18 and Times internet collectively for Rs 1324 crore. Viacom18 won the rights of AUS, SA, and UK territories, while Times Internet bagged MENA & US sectors.
Along with the media rights share, the franchises also get a 50% share from the sponsorship revenues. The value of the Indian T20 league is expected to grow manifold in the coming years bringing massive profits for both BCCI and the franchises. The current numbers have already made it the second-most lucrative sporting league in the world and thus, it won’t be a surprise for many if it reaches the top mark soon.
