The match between Gimnasia and Boca Juniors was called-off because of police intervention outside the stadium. According to reports, at least one person died when the fans and police faced off, as the fans tried to enter the stadium which was already full. Sensing that the situation was getting out of hand, the police retaliated with rubber bullets and tear gas to contain the crowd.

When the tear gas entered the stadium, the players faced difficulty in breathing. The referee halted play in the 9th minute when clouds of tear gas spread across the stadium. This is the second such incident in less than a week after the use of tear gas led to a stampede that left 131 people dead in Indonesia.

Here is the video:

To escape the tear gas, the players went back to their changing rooms while the spectators ran in all directions across the ground. The Argentine Football Association issued a statement on its Twitter account rebuking the incident and violence: “The AFA strongly repudiates the events that took place today in the vicinity of Gimnasia stadium and expresses its commitment to continue working to eradicate this kind of incidents that tarnishes the spirit of football.”

FIFA has a strict advisory against the use of tear gas unless required

“Unfortunately, there is one person dead. He died of a heart problem,” Sergio Berni, security minister of the province, told Todo Noticias. Berni gave no details about the circumstances in which that person died. Regarding the game, no new date was announced, and some fans have alleged that there had been overselling of tickets in the excitement that the two teams would be battling it out for the league title.

People were later miffed that they could not get entry into the stadium. When it comes to security protocols, FIFA  advises against the use of tear gas in or around stadiums in order to avoid risky situations such as in La Plata or the situation that happened in the Indonesian city of Malanga last Saturday, when many fans were crushed to death during the stampede.
