‘GG aur uska gussa’ – Fans react as Gautam Gambhir asks why spirit of cricket only applies to Indians after Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal in Lord’s Test
Australia beat England by 43 runs at Lords. But not before the heat turned up on Day 5 after Jonny Bairstow was run out by Alex Carey. It happened on the last ball in the first session of Cameron Green’s over. Bairstow was dismissed by Carey as he wandered down the pitch without signalling to the Australian keeper. Also, the umpire had not called ‘over’ at that point to mark the end of the over.
There was a lot of discussion on this with the spirit of the game. According to the rules, the dismissal was legitimate. Gautam Gambhir also expressed his views and took a dig at Australia in the form of a cryptic tweet. “Hey, sledgers… Does the spirit of the game logic apply to you, or is it just for Indians?” He wrote. The dismissal was widely seen all across the world and cricket fans gave their reactions to it.
That’s all you will ever be remembered for -Stuart Broad to Alex Carey
Stuart Broad, who came after Bairstow in the England batting lineup, spoke to Carey, stating, “That’s all you’ll ever be remembered for.” Broad also expressed his disappointment to Pat Cummins, labelling the incident as “the worst thing I’ve ever seen in cricket” When it comes to the spirit of the game, Cummins could have called Bairstow back. After the run-out happened, the decision went to third umpire Murray Erasmus and he adjudged Bairstow out.
An Australia team spokesman later claimed that players had been ‘verbally abused’ and ‘physically contacted’ by MCC members in the Lord’s Pavilion during the lunch break who were very upset over Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal. Soon After Ben Stokes took the attack to the Australians and sent them on a leather hunt as he struck a cracking 155 off 214 balls with nine fours and nine sixes.
Once Stokes was dismissed after a mistimed shot, the fire had gone away from England and the lower order succumbed to the Australian short ball barrage. This gave the Kangaroos a vital 2-0 lead heading into the Third Test at Headingley. There are still three Tests left to be played in the Ashes.
Let us take a look at the reactions on Twitter:
Point taken on aussies asking us to play in spirit
Dint find anything wrong in that dismissal its similar to runout at non striker in bowling stride
If rules are there play is as per the rule , one cant walk out of crease till over is called even in gully leave intl cricket

Has this been Dhoni, people would have celebrated saying presence of mind, god of cricket etc.
It’s war. Nothing wrong.
What Carey did was correct.
If we shout, it only denotes our inefficiency @arathu1702

The incident of shouting at the Australian players by the MCC members is condemnable in the strongest possible terms. It has clearly lowered the image of MCC and the spirit of the game.

Nailed it! A million dollar question, that they for sure, wil have no answers for! Interestingly, the TV umpires also seem to be in the same league; for calling their decision so effortlessly 😊 Ridiculous at all levels !
