While Cricket can be seen as a recreational sport for many but some it is their life and can even change their lives. One such story is of West Indies’ young sensational who dismantled the Australian batting attack in the 2nd day-night test match at Brisbane- Shamar Brooks.

A young talent who a couple of years ago wasn’t even in playing-class cricket is now displaying his prowess at the highest level against the mighty Australia on their home turf. In the world of cricket, tales of unexpected rises to stardom are not uncommon. In just two games, he emerged as the second-highest wicket-taker in the series, pocketing a total of 14 wickets.

Shamar Joseph’s rise to success

Joseph’s ascent in the cricketing world is nothing short of astonishing. Less than a year ago, he held a position as a security officer in Berbice. He always had an interest in Cricket and used to play with his cousins by using melted plastic bottles and fruits to transform them into balls. Joseph comes from a very religious family and this faith restricted him from playing cricket on Saturdays, reserved for serving the Church. His commitment to his beliefs limited his playing time to Sundays, showcasing the challenges he overcame on his journey.

The turning point in Joseph’s life occurred when he worked as a security guard and crossed paths with Damion Vantull, a former Guyana cricketer turned businessman. Vantull played a pivotal role in shaping Joseph’s cricketing career, providing guidance and opportunities.

Joseph’s decision to leave home and pursue full-time club cricket marked a significant step toward recognition and success. As Joseph continued to showcase his talent in club cricket, he quickly gained attention and secured a place in the Guyanese national side and from there his progression to the West Indies national side was very swift.

Rising through the ranks

Joseph was handed his first cap by the renowned Brian Lara before the Adelaide Test, and he immediately left a lasting impression in his initial over. In a remarkable feat, he dismissed the Australian vice-captain, Steve Smith, on the very first delivery, much to the delight of Lara, who was in the commentary box wearing a smile. But things got even better when he made a comeback in the 2nd innings of the 2nd test at Brisbane by taking 7 wickets in Australia’s 2nd innings to register West Indies 1st victory in Australian soil in 27 years.

Subsequently, Joseph seamlessly adapted to international cricket, showcasing exceptional skill by securing 14 wickets across two tests and ultimately clinching the Player of the Series award.
