India have been phenomenal in the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022 and their batting unit deserves a lot of credit for that. Virat Kohli’s return to form and the emergence of Suryakumar Yadav are two of the biggest reasons why India have been able to post formidable scores on the bouncy tracks of Australia.

However, there were concerns over KL Rahul’s form in the tournament. He failed to deliver with the bat in the first three matches. The Indian opener scored only 4 runs in the first match against Pakistan and followed it up with 9-run each against the Netherlands and South Africa.

Fans lashed out at the Indian opener for not stepping up on the big occasion and wanted India to drop him from the next game. However, Rahul shut down all the critics with a blistering knock of 50 runs in just 32 balls in the next match against Bangladesh.

He looked confident right from the start and hit as many as 4 sixes in the encounter. His strike rate of 156.25 also deserves a mention. Following the impressive performance, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir lauded KL Rahul for his knock and urged on the importance of backing him despite a few bad performances.

“When he got a fifty against Australia (in the practice match) in Brisbane, everyone was going crazy. He is probably going to light up this World Cup. A bad innings does not make you a bad player, and neither does it make you a great player. So, you probably need to be more balanced. You got to give them time and then that one shot over point probably changed everything,” Gambhir said on Star Sports show, ‘Cricket Live’.

“He is back in form, and he was always in form. Yes, there are times when you want to contribute, you know that this is a World Cup and the entire world is looking at you. And if you haven’t had the best of starts, it doesn’t mean you’re a bad player,” Gambhir added.

India are sitting at the top in Group 2 with 3 wins in 4 matches. They will be playing their last group stage encounter against Zimbabwe in Melbourne on Sunday.
